ADULT MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID COURSE

Saturday, October 19, 2019, 3:00 PM

The Dunwoody Police Department will host free Mental Health First Aid training for Dunwoody residents on Saturday, October 19th, 2019 from 8:00AM to 5:00PM. Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8-hour training to teach participants how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it helps trainees identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The adult Mental Health First Aid course is appropriate for anyone 18 years and older who wants to learn how to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health related crisis or problem. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, psychosis, and addictions. One in five Americans has a mental illness, but many are reluctant to seek help or might not know where to turn for care. Unlike physical conditions, symptoms of mental health and substance use problems can be difficult to detect. For friends and family members, it can be hard to know when and how to step in. As a result, those in need of mental health services often do not get them until it is too late. Just as CPR helps even those without clinical training assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis. Mental Health First Aiders learn a 5-step action plan that guides them through the process of reaching out and offering appropriate support. The course is free of charge and open to all Dunwoody residents. The course will start promptly at 08:00AM and end by 5:00PM, with an hour for lunch.  More information about Mental Health First Aid at https://www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org/  FAQs   Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
