In its original incarnation, in the early '70s, Captain Beyond was formed by former members of Deep Purple (singer Rod Evans), Johnny Winter's band (drummer Bobby Caldwell) and especially Iron Butterfly (guitarist Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt and bassist Lee Dorman). The band's sound was an extension of the heavy heavy, out-there stoner rock by which Iron Butterfly made its name. Despite a couple of albums and touring with some prominent acts (Alice Cooper, The Allman Brothers, Black Sabbath), stardom didn't happen. Evans left the business, and eventually, in 1978, the band broke up. Rhino and Caldwell decided to re-form the band in 2000. The lineup didn't last long - Rhino left the group shortly after and died in 2012, a few months before Dorman - but Caldwell has soldiered on with a roster that has included bassist Jeff Artabasy since the 2000 version, as well as singer Don Bonzi and guitarist Simon Lind.
